Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu , who own the Rakiura Titi Islands (18 islands situated around Stewart Island) have devised a an annual work program in order to clear rubbish from the islands. The purchasing of the lifting bags from Smart Pack has been a huge contribution to it’s success. With these new certified bags it lessens the potential spread of weeds and seeds across the islands. Each whānau has an opportunity to use the Bulk Bags then the bags are lifted off the island by helicopter and taken back to the mainland. Ngāi Tahu fund this operation and is recognised by environmentalists as an excellent example of Māori caring for the islands.
