How To Calculate/Interpret The Volume Of A Bag

Interpreting/Calculating the dimensions and volume of different bag designs (made easy)

Figuring out the exact dimensions & volume of your bags can present somewhat of a challenge if you don’t know exactly what you’re doing.

If you make a mistake, it could send you down the wrong path with weights and measures requirements. You might set artwork from the wrong template. It could impact the costing you are working on.

So it’s pretty important to get it right.

And actually, it’s not that hard, once the method is clear.

Interpreting the dimensions and volume of open mouth bags:

 FLAT  FILLED

Gusset Bag

W - Width
L - Length
D - Depth (Gusset)

Volume = WxLxD

Note: Measurements are taken when the bag is empty meaning this equation has not allowed for the space lost at pinched bottom end of bag and the top of bag where you have sealed/sewn it off.
You will need to consider this when finalising your calculations.

Pillow Bag

W - Width
L - Length
D - Depth

Volume = WxLxD

Note: Measurements are taken when the bag is empty meaning this equation has not allowed for the space lost at pinched bottom end of bag and the top of bag where you have sealed/sewn it off.
You will need to consider this when finalising your calculations.

To create the Depth dimension you need to take it off the Width dimension. (Example: if bag is 900Lx500W you could take 100 off the W dimension and add that as the D dimension meaning measurement becomes 900Lx400Wx100D).

Block Bottom Bag

 L - Length
BBW - Block Bottom Width
BBD - Block Bottom Depth

Volume = LxBBWxBBD

Note: Measurements are taken when the bag is empty meaning this equation has not allowed for the space lost at the top of bag where you have sealed/sewn it off.
You will need to consider this when finalising your calculations.
In this case the space at the bottom of the bag is fully utilized.
